While solar flares are not impossible, they are definitely not something that happens every single day. In 1859, the planet suffered from the phenomenon in question. Known as the Carrington Event, this led to a geomagnetic tempest that resulted in the cabling of telegraph systems. It went on to light up the skies with auroras. If something like this took place now, it will disrupt power and communication lines.

Can you believe that we got out lucky recently? In 2012, a huge burst of mass was fired off by the Sun and towards the outer atmosphere or corona. It was headed towards us, but it thankfully missed. After all, we are still here! However, a boffin from the University of Colorado by the name of Dr. Daniel Baker talked about how lucky this was. In 2014, he said, “If it had hit, we would still be picking up the pieces.”
